Just imagine if your feline friend developed a cat urinary blockage. This condition is aserious complication of feline lower urinary tract disease, also known as FLUTD. It’s often caused by cat bladder stones blocking the urethra so your male cat can’t pass any urine.

Why Does This Happen To Male Cats?

A cat blockage is rarely seen in female cats. This is because the urethra in females is much shorter and broader than it is in males. Although this puts females at greater risk for cat bladder infections, this does protect them somewhat from a feline urinary blockage.

Because male cats have a much smaller urinary opening than females do, it doesn’t take a very big feline bladder stone to cause urinary blockage in cats.

How Your Vet Treats A Urinary Blockage In Cats.

If your cat is unable to pass any urine, or can pass very little, this is an emergency. Your cat’s kidneys stop functioning when the urine has no place to go, which allows toxins to build up in the body very quickly. This toxin build-up causes death within a few days if it’s not treated.

Your vet will insert a catheter to allow the urine to drain out of the bladder. Your cat will probably need to stay at the animal hospital for a few days, as the catheter may be stitched in place. Treatment may include flushing the bladder with fluids to wash out any bladder stones that are present.

Your cat will be given fluids, either by IV or under the skin, to prevent dehydration. He’ll also be assessed for any problems related to the toxic build-up in his system.

Most cats can go home after a few days. But you’ll need to feed your cat a special diet for the rest of his life to prevent bladder stones from forming again.

What If The Blockage Happens Again?

If your cat continues to have problems with a cat urinary blockage, surgery may be the next step. This operation, called a feline perineal urethrostomy, enlarges your cat’s urinary opening to prevent blockages from recurring.

This operation only prevents cat blockage, not FLUTD. A cat who has had this operation is more likely to develop feline bladder infection and bladder stones. He should have urine cultures done three or four times a year to be sure he’s not suffering from a feline lower urinary tract infection.

Prevent Cat Bladder Stones

You can nip this problem in the bud by preventing cat bladder stones in the first place. Cats with very concentrated urine are more prone to developing stones.

The key is to feed your cat canned food instead of dry. Cats are meant to get most of their water from the food they eat. A high quality canned food has a moisture content closer to what a cat in the wild would eat. A cat who is always fed dry food is probably chronically dehydrated.

Be sure your cat always has access to plenty of clean, fresh drinking water.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies for cats are now available. These remedies are especially formulated to treat and prevent cat urinary problems. It’s essential to purchase these safe, effective remedies from a well-known company with a great reputation for manufacturing the highest quality pet products.

Now that you have this information, you can take steps to protect your kitty from ever experiencing a cat urinary blockage.

The big question when considering using holistic pet treatments is, How do I know when it is safe to treat my pet at home and when do I need to take her to the Vet?

Dr. Andrew Jones answers this very important question and much more in his new course.

He created Veterinary Secrets Revealed 2.0 as a Complete Home Study Multimedia Course. The Course now has a Quick Start Guide, 8 DVD presentations, 4 Webinar CD ROMS, 4 audio presentations, 500 page Veterinary Secrets2.0 Manual and 250 page Pet First Aid Manual.

When used in the step by step ways he clearly illustrates, it will allow you to examine your pet, make a tentative diagnosis, and show you the possible safe, natural and effective at home remedies.

But you must first study the different parts of his course and practice examining your pet at home. Once you become skilled at the at home exam, then you will be able to recognize what is abnormal in your pet.

You will be able to judge if the condition is serious and requires immediate veterinary care, or if the condition can be treated at home.

On all of the selected diseases he discusses, He advises when you should seek immediate veterinary care, as well as when you can treat your pet at home.
____________________________________________

To Illustrate, here he uses the example of a cat abscess situation:
____________________________________________

One day your cat is not acting herself. She isn’t eating very much and seems to be sleeping more.

Step 1:

First you perform a thorough exam, based on his at home exam video. You go through the The At Home Exam Report.

Step 2

You RECORD your findings in an orderly way!

You find that your cat has a fever of 39.5 Celsius. (103 Farenheit)

You find that she has a painful area on her tail base.

You note that she is not dehydrated.

You see that her gum color is pink, meaning good blood pressure.

You listen to her heart, and see that she is breathing normal.

You find a draining open hole on the painful area.

Step 3

After recording your observations and clinical findings, form a list
of disease possibilities.

Use the Table of Contents and the Index at the back to read about the
specific diseases.

In reading about the treatments, decide which is most appropriate for
your pet.

The index under fever refers to abscesses.

You decide that your pet likely has an abscess.

You watch his DVD presentation on abscesses. You read about abscesses
in his hard copy manual - you see a picture of an abscess.

You read this:

KNOW WHEN TO SEE YOUR VETERINARIAN : If your pet is very lethargic, not
eating or drinking, then see your veterinarian immediately. Bacteria
from abscesses can spread in the body, giving your pet septicemia
(blood poisoning). If your pet has a large swelling which is not draining,
then you must see your veterinarian to have it drained surgically.
Abscesses which are open and draining and small bite wounds can be treated
safely at-home.

Your cat is still eating, is not dehydrated, and has a draining abscess.

Based on these symptoms, you decide that this is something that you can
treat at home.

Step 4

You read about these treatments:

BARBER TIME. Trim the hair around the bite or wound. Trim large sections
with scissors, and carefully use a disposable razor to trim the hair next
to the skin.

KEEP IT CLEAN. If possible, put your pet in the sink or bathtub and run
lukewarm tap water on the bite or abscess for 5 minutes. If your pet
won’t tolerate running water, use a damp cloth or gauze sponge. Purchase
an antiseptic soap, Hibitane, available at your local pharmacy, and wash
the area well. Keep the wound clean and perform this water therapy twice
daily for 5-7 days.

HOMEOPATHIC. Hepar Sulph and Silica are top homeopathic remedies for healing.
The doses being 30C given twice daily for 3-5 days. It will help the body
remove debris from the wound, in other words, help draw out the abscess.

You decide upon a homeopathic treatment, so you WATCH the Video, At Home
Homeopathy for Dogs and Cats, and you READ about Homeopathic healing
in the MANUAL.

STEP 5

The Treatment.

Once you decide upon a course of action, go to a reputable supplier, such as a
local Health Coop, and purchase the specific homeopathic remedies.

You clip the hair around your cat’s abscess.

You wash it twice daily with an anti-septic soap. You keep the hole open, as
I advise in the abscess section.

You give the homeopathic medication.

In treating your pet, you record the Daily Changes in your pet, including response
to treatment with the PROGRESS SHEETS.

If your pet responds well… GREAT!

If they don’t respond, re-consider your diagnosis, or See your veterinarian.

If you have any concerns about at home health care for your pet see your local
veterinarian.

P.S. His NEW course is far more comprehensive, and VERY easy to implement
in treating your dog or cat at Home with Safe and Natural Remedies.

He has included 8 Videos so you can SEE *exactly* what to do.

If this isn’t for you, I fully understand, BUT your going to be surprised at how affordable it will be, consider your vet visit costs over the span of a year and factor in the lifetime value this powerful course will have and it is really a very easy decision to make.

I just received this message from Dr Andrew Jones, DVM and thought it was very important

to pass on to you.

I recently read an article about the current financial crisis, and how it is affecting the lives of many dogs and cats. IF you have lost your job, and no alternate source of funds, a sick or injured pet may have to be euthanized. I have not seen this at my practice, BUT this is happening in many communities all over North America.

———————— Here is the story: ———————–

As the United States economy continues to spiral, pet owners grappling with financial troubles are facing terrible choices, animal care experts say. Confronted with steep bills for emergency injuries or sudden illness, cash-conscious owners are delaying care, opting for less-aggressive treatments, or in some cases, choosing to destroy family
pets they otherwise would save.

"They come straight from the vet and say, ‘I can’t afford to treat my animal,’ " said Mark Kump president of the National Animal Control Association and director of an animal shelter near Dayton, Ohio. "They’ll say, ‘The vet said he should be euthanized and I can’t even afford that.’ " Kumpf said he’s seen a 20 percent spike in people turning in animals at his shelter in the past year, and an equal hike in the number of people who request what’s known as "economic euthanasia." No national figures track overall
rates of relinquishment or euthanasia, but some veterinarians across the country say they’re also seeing a rise.

Tracy Blinn, 37, of Surprise, Ariz., who can’t aff*ord the cost of X-rays and blood tests to see what’s wrong with her 8-year-old rottweiler, Kona. A month ago, one of Kona’s legs became too swollen and painful to use and the dog’s right eye started drooping.

Even a few years ago, the $360 cost for diagnostic tests would have been nothing, said Blinn. But her family runs a direct-mail marketing business that served the struggling local automobile industry; nearly all their work has dried up. And the four investment houses that once provide a tidy income have recently slipped into foreclosure, she said.

Blinn asked a local vet for a break on the costs to treat Kona, but he refused. "He said he’s been having a lot of issues with people not paying their vet bills," Blinn said. "I’ve looked everywhere on the Internet and called everyone. I even put an ad on Craigslist."

She has four kids and three dogs and a husband who has one solution in mind. "He’s just willing to put her down and I’m not willing. I have hope. Why not try?" she said. "I just think it’s sad. You get these animals and it’s a trust issue. I’m feeling terrible that just because of finances, she might die."

  *****************************************************************

P.S. Veterinary Care is expensive - BUT there are many things that you can do to minimize this.

1. PREVENT disease in the first place- Quality, Varied diet.

2. Supplement- The Best WAY to ensure that your pet gets ALL the nutrition that they need to PREVENT disease.

MY disease preventing supplement is here:

  http://www.thedogsupplement.com

3. Become an EMPOWERED dog and cat owner by taking matters into your OWN hands. Use safe, natural and effective At Home Remedies.

Here is a great way to start:

Veterinary Health Secrets

4. At the very least use some of the Alternate Healing techniques that I discuss in my newsletter.

They come with a pretty sweet Cost ( Free!)

5. Be aware of Conventional Veterinary Care which may lead to disease… Vaccines, Poor Quality Carbohydrate LOADED ‘Veterinary Food’ and Long term Veterinary Medications.

Your path to a healthier pet.

Best Wishes, Dr Andrew Jones, DVM

Has Your Cat Been Diagnosed With Feline Idiopathic Cystitis?

If your furball has been diagnosed with idiopathic cystitis in cats, you probably have a lot of questions. Read on to learn more about this condition, and how you can help your cat with natural remedies for pets .

What Is Feline Idiopathic Cystitis?

"Idiopathic" is a fancy word that means "we don’t know what’s causing it." When it comes to feline lower urinary tract disease, this can be very frustrating. Cystitis in cats is a very common condition, unfortunately. And an even more unfortunate fact is that in nearly half of the cats diagnosed with FLUTD, there doesn’t seem to be a cause.

Some vets refer to this condition as "feline interstitial cystitis" because it’s very similar to interstitial cystitis in humans.

How Feline Idiopathic Cystitis Resembles Interstitial Cystitis In People

Comparing these conditions in both cats and humans show some interesting results.

People with interstitial cystitis have more sensory nerves in their bladders. Many cats who have FLUTD do, too. Often a person with interstitial cystitis doesn’t have the mucus lining in their bladders that protects the bladder from becoming irritated by urine. This is true of cats with idiopathic cystitis in cats, also.

Recurring bladder infections are a problem in both humans and cats.
Stress seems to be a precipitating factor for cystitis both in cats and in humans.

There are studies going on to find out if both people and cats are suffering from the same condition. If so, human treatments may be helpful for kitties, as well.

Drug Treatments For Idiopathic Cystitis In Cats

If your cat is having a lot of severe episodes, your vet may prescribe amitriptyline. It relieves the pain and inflammation associated with cystitis in cats. Side effects can include sleepiness, weight gain, bladder stones, and urine retention. Your cat may not groom himself as much, either.

Steroids may be given to reduce bladder inflammation. Glucosamine has been found to repair the mucus lining of the bladder, so your vet may want to try that.

What Can You Do At Home To Help A Cat With FLUTD?

Diet is very important for these cats. There has always been an emphasis on reducing the acidity of the urine, along with decreasing the amount of magnesium and calcium in the urine. But the latest research shows that the rate of water turnover is the most important.

What this means is that you need to increase your cat’s water intake. This will keep his urine dilute to keep the acidity lower, and prevent high mineral levels.

If you feed your cat dry food, it’s very important to switch him over to canned food. Dry food has moisture levels below ten percent. Why is this a problem? Because cats are made to get most of their water from their food. In a natural setting, cats eat mice and other animals, which are 98% water. They don’t need to drink much water.

Canned food is has a 75% moisture level, which is certainly better than the moisture level in dry food. It can be difficult to switch a cat who has always eaten dry food over to canned food, but patience and persistence over several months often pays off in better health for your kitty.

Reducing your cat’s stress levels is important, too. Many cats will have episodes of feline lower urinary tract disease after a stressful event like moving. Some cats are even affected by weather changes.

Natural Remedies For Pets Can Help

Many cat owners have had great success with treating their cats with a natural remedy made especially for pets . This cat uti remedy contains uva ursi and barberry, two herbs with a long history of use in treating human bladder problems. It also contains the homeopathic remedies Cantharis and Staphysagria. This remedy is safe for long-term use in cats, and is very effective for preventing cat urinary problems.

Put this to the test right away, and see how well this remedy works on your cat with feline idiopathic cystitis.

Holistic Dog Health Strategies

Holistic dog health care - a more rounded approach to health care for dogs.

Holistic dog health care is becoming a natural way for pet owners to ensure that their beloved dogs are at their healthiest, living long, happy lives well into old age.

Nutritional needs are perhaps the most important aspect to consider when it comes to a dog’s health, as theirs are somewhat different from ours and will require a certain balance of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to ensure everything from the digestive systems to the bones, joints, and organs as well as the skin and coat are as healthy as possible. A diet of meat, vegetables, and whole grains without any processed foods or unnecessary fillers is usually recommended when following the holistic approach to dog care.

Using a variety of essential oils, plant extracts, herbs and flowering essences, people have treated numerous ailments and conditions over the past thousands of years. As of recently, these ancient healing practices have found their way into pet care and are now becoming increasingly popular as more and more dog owners are looking for safer, healthier, and less invasive alternatives to treating their pets.

Some plants commonly used for treating ailments in dogs include calendula and chamomile. Both help heal wounds, and chamomile is also helpful in treating respiratory issues too.To help your dog to recover from constipation or bowel disorders, you can try crushed flaxseed mixed with lot of water. For dry, itchy skin, oats are as soothing to a dog’s skin as they are to a human’s, and if your pup is having trouble sleeping, smelling some lavender may help them to relax and finally fall soundly asleep.

Be sure to do your homework before using any herbal concoctions on your dog. Some herbs and flowers can be harmful or even toxic to animals or people. Also, ask your veterinarian for their input and recommendations when it comes to holistic dog health and using all-natural remedies for their care.

Today there are an increasing number of veterinarians who are putting great stock in holistic dog health, making it a large part of their practice. A Vet who utilizes holistic pet strategies treats the dog as a whole, rather than looking at a speciic problem and utilizing one type of treatment to treat that specific illness or disease.

As an example, if your dog has suddenly come down with some sort of rash on his skin causing irritation, redness, itching, a possible infection, and some fur loss, a "regular" vet might send you away with an antibiotic to treat the skin infection and then perhaps a topical ointment to deal with the itching.

A holistic veterinarian will place more emphasis on determining the cause of the rash as the source of the infection before prescribing those two remedies.Your pet’s lifestyle, eating habits and his environment are all considered when attempting to treat him holistically.

It never fails. Mainstream veterinarians are quick to prescribe antibiotics for cat urinary infection but the infections just keep coming back. Antibiotics may get rid of the immediate symptoms of urinary tract infection in your cat but beyond that are they effective? Many pet owners are turning to safer, natural solutions and it’s easy to understand why.

I don’t doubt the fact that cat urinary problems must first and foremost be diagnosed by a veterinarian. If you notice any changes in your cat’s behavior, such as if he is drinking more water than usual, he seems to be in pain when urinating, or he is urinating more frequently, go to a veterinarian immediately to rule out any serious causes.

A tumor, bladder stones, struvite crystals, or serious disease can cause a cat urinary infection. Your veterinarian may have to perform a surgical procedure in order to cure the problem. Otherwise, a special diet may be necessary in order to dissolve the crystals or stones.

Antibiotics may be prescribed in order to get rid of your cat’s infection. Not only are antibiotics difficult to administer, they also have dangerous side effects. Not to mention the high doses required to treat cat urinary problems may actually aggravate the infection.

Another reason why pet owners should start straying away from antibiotics for treatment of cat urinary infection is that their overuse has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Over time bacteria are going to evolve to the point that we won’t even be able to get rid of it anymore if we keep using antibiotics anytime our cats have an infection!

The best way to take care of cat urinary problems before they spiral out of control is with natural treatment. A healthy diet and lifestyle and avoiding exposure to toxins and chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides can go a long way in helping your cat reach an optimum state of health so urinary tract infections don’t become a problem in the first place. Along with these lifestyle changes, administering a homeopathic remedy can be very helpful in maintaining optimum bladder functioning and overall good health. Homeopathic remedies come in granule form so they are easy to give your cat.

Now it’s time to start putting these tips to use. Conventional treatment with antibiotics may be a quick fix for cat urinary infection but they are only a temporary solution. Furthermore, the dangerous side effects of conventional treatment can actually put your cat’s health at risk. If you want your cat to be healthy and infection free without putting his health in danger, make lifestyle changes and give him a homeopathic remedy . By doing so, you will help your cat recover permanently so he can stay healthy for years to come.

Take a look at the alternative medicine for pets such as dog and cat.

Alternative Medicine for Pets - Dogs

Here are a few alternative medicines for pet dogs. However, do consult a good veterinary doctor before trying out an alternative medicine for your pet dog.

One of the alternative medicines that is suggested for pet dogs is "Nosodes". Nosodes is a homeopathic mixture that is given to a pet dog instead of vaccination. There are studies to show it as being effective in reducing the active diseases. However, there are no proven studies to show that vaccination is not required if this alternative medicine is used.

The major problems faced by a dog owner are fleas and ticks on their pet’s body. Instead of using chemicals to remove or control the fleas and ticks, you could use alternative veterinary medicine. The dog owner could make a mixture out of garlic paste, basil (herb) and brewer’s yeast. Rub the paste on the body of your dog before giving it a bath. However, it is a wise idea to keep the kennel and the surrounding area clean. The dog has to be groomed once a day to keep it clean.

Like human beings, dogs are also prone to allergies and arthritis. To prevent or cure certain allergies or arthritis you could use anti-oxidants as an alternative medicine. You could also change the diet of the dog by adding Omega fatty acid and glucosamine supplements.

Alternative Medicine for Pets - Cats

Alternative medicine including alternative therapies such as acupressure, aromatherapy, herbal medicines and massage therapy could be used to cure various health disorders in felines. However, before apply acupressure, it would be wise to consult a well-versed veterinarian. Acupressure and at times, acupuncture, is used to treat arthritis or an injury caused due to accidental fall.

Chiropractic therapy is an alternative therapy practiced on cats with misaligned vertebrae or herniated discs. This treatment helps to sooth injured muscles or joints of your pet cat. Another alternative medicine is Bach flower remedies. To treat cats with behavioral problems, flower essences are used. This is known as Bach flower remedy. Homeopathy is another alternative treatment used to treat various ailments of pet felines.

The families who prefer using alternative medicine for their own treatment, would like to use alternative medicines on their pet animals also. Research and studies are still going on regarding the use of alternative medicines on pet animals; however, there are vets who are practicing alternative medicine such as acupressure and chiropractic therapy.

Feline Urinary Problems — What Every Cat Owner Should Know

Did you know that up to 1.5 percent of all cats in the US are plagued with feline urinary problems? That’s a lot of cats.

These problems can range from an uncomfortable cat bladder infection to a life-threatening cat urinary blockage. An an informed cat owner, you should always be on the lookout for cat urinary problems.

What’s The Difference Between FUS And FLUTD?

Many cat owners are confused, and rightfully so, over the terms used to describe cat urinary problems. FLUTD is an acronym that stands for Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. FLUTD used to be known as FUS, or Feline Urologic Syndrome. Feline Urologic Syndrome has been renamed as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease to reflect that most of the urinary problems in cats happen in the lower urinary tract, which includes the bladder and urethra.

Overview Of Feline Urinary Disease

There are many different aspects to feline urinary problems. Here’s a quick overview of a few different conditions that can affect your cat’s urinary tract.

Cystitis is an inflammation of your cat’s bladder.
If your cat’s urethra is inflamed, he has urethritis.
Idiopathic cystitis means that the cause of the bladder inflammation is not known.
Bladder stones in cats often occur as a result of feline urinary crystals.
A tumor in your cat’s bladder may cause problems, too.

You can see that it’s important to pinpoint what’s causing your cat’s urinary tract problems in order to treat his condition successfully.

Symptoms of Cat Urinary Problems

No matter what’s causing the feline urinary tract problems, your cat will show these symptoms:

Bloody urine
Urinating in places other than his litter box
Urinating often, but passing only small amounts of urine
Straining to urinate, or not being able to pass urine at all
Crying out in pain in the litter box

Any of these symptoms should be enough for you to take your cat to the vet for a check-up.

What Your Vet Will Do

Your vet will examine your cat and feel his bladder to see how full it is. The vet will also want to do a urinalysis to check for infection or feline urinary crystals, and may want to do a cat urine culture to see if bacteria are present. If your cat’s bladder is distended, that indicates a cat urinary blockage, and your vet may want to take x-rays or do an ultrasound to look for cat bladder stones.

What Can You Do To Prevent Feline Urinary Disease?

There are many steps cat owners can take to prevent their cats from developing feline urinary tract problems. The most important thing you can do is to feed a high-quality canned food. Cats are supposed to get most of their water from their food.

A cat who eats only dry food is usually chronically dehydrated, which leads to his urine becoming concentrated. And concentrated urine can lead to cat bladder stones, and a whole host of problems that goes along with them.

Be sure your cat always has access to plenty of clean, fresh water, too.

You may want to consider giving your cat a natural remedy for pets that supports bladder health in felines. This remedy should contain herbal extracts of barberry and uva ursi, along with the homeopathic remedies Cantharis and Staphysagria. These natural treatments have stood the test of time for bladder infections in humans, and they have been proven to work very well in cats.

Your goal now? To make sure your cat doesn’t become a statistic suffering from feline urinary problems.

Parasite Control : Control the Pests that Plague your Dog

Take a look at the common parasites that plague our canine companions. Learn what to look for when your dog has ticks or fleas and discover some very simple and effective ways in which to ease the itch problems.

No matter how healthy your dog is, they face an almost constant assault from both external and internal parasites such as fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, mites, lice, heartworms (spread by infected mosquitoes), tapeworms (often obtained by ingesting an infected flea), roundworms, hookworms, whip worms, and even microscopic protozoa. Just what risk do these insidious pests pose to your canine companion though, other than the obvious itchy skin that can result from the bite of a flea or mosquito? The list of potential diseases and physical symptoms can include, but not be limited to, the following:

Babesiosis
Colorado Tick Fever
Ehrlichiosis
Giardia
Haemobartonellosis
Lyme Disease
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Tick Paralysis
Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever
Tularemia
West Nile Virus
Anemia (i.e. a deficiency of red blood cells and/or hemoglobin which carry oxygen throughout the body)
Decreased lung function
Encephalitis (i.e. inflammation of the brain)
Flea allergy dermatitis
Hair loss
Heart damage and/or failure
Joint swelling and pain
Numerous gastro-intestinal problems including vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite
Skin infections
Suppression of the immune system
Weight loss
Death

When looking at the "big parasite picture" from this angle, it can all seem terribly frightening. However, the healthier your dog is, the better they’ll be able to defend themselves against such attacks and/or to rebound from any symptoms or ailments that they do acquire. Healthier dogs also seem to be "less attractive" to such pests and, therefore, less likely to be attacked by them in the first place.

The other good news is that there are a wide range of weapons to ward off and/or to fight such pests and their associated health risks. Such products often come in the form of medicinal and "natural" collars, dips, foggers, oral drops/pills, powders, shampoos, "spot-ons," and sprays. While many claims and testimonials are made pertaining to the effectiveness of such medicated products, one must take into consideration the potential risks that are associated with their use.

Risks can be minimized by using the least amount needed for the shortest length of time deemed necessary (e.g. spacing medicated flea treatments six weeks apart instead of four and only using them during the "warm season," not year round). Such risks can include, but not be limited to, the following:
Any chemical-based parasite product, whether a flea collar or a pill, can cause an allergic reaction ranging from mild (e.g. skin rashes, hair loss) to deadly (e.g. epileptic seizure).
Chemical-based parasite products can be very harsh on the toxin-filtering kidneys and liver and can lead to their eventual failure.
Chemical-based parasite products can cause a variety of autoimmune disorders whereby the body begins attacking itself instead of the offending organism.
The overuse of any chemical-based parasite product can lead to the offending parasite developing a resistance to such a product.

What’s a dog owner to do then to protect their beloved furry friend from an onslaught of parasites and their associated health risks? How about taking a more natural approach, one that’s generally far safer, much less expensive, often times more effective, and that focuses on also controlling your dog’s environment instead of just "attacking" your dog directly?

These are just a few of the options you have when waging such a holistic-based war:

Ants - allow these "lesser of the environmental evils" to survive as they feed on flea eggs and larvae
Boric acid products - contain a powder that attacks the outer "protective layer" of the offending parasite - most often flea larvae - by drying it out; can be applied to your dog’s "environment" (e.g. bedding, carpeting) and directly on them too, if used cautiously (the dust can be irritating to the lungs)
Diatomaceous earth products - contain a powder made from the hard outer shell of single-celled algae (i.e. diatoms) that generally works in the same manner as boric acid; can also be added to food to help rid your dog of roundworms and other various parasites
Essential oils - including eucalyptus, cedar, and rosemary
Flea combs - should be used daily and any fleas that are found should be "drowned" in soapy water
Flea traps - use light and/or heat to capture fleas in water or on "sticky traps"
Herbal products to be applied topically - including collars, powders, sprays, shampoos, and towelettes that contain such herbs as citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, neem, and penny royal.
Herbal products to be ingested - including powders, pills, and liquid drops (e.g. tinctures that are made much like flower essences but that are extracted using grain alcohol instead of water); contain such herbs as black walnut green hulls, cloves, and wormwood (the combination of those three herbs is said to be effective at killing more than one hundred species of parasites, including all of the various "developmental stages")
Homeopathic remedies - including Chenopodium, Cina, Filix mas, Sulphur, and nosodes for heartworm
Mosquito dunks and/or drops - contain a naturally occurring bacteria that is only toxic to certain insects; can be added directly to bodies of mosquito-laden water (e.g. birdbaths, ponds)
Natural predators - put up purple martin bird houses and bat boxes to aid these parasite-eating predators
Nematode worm products - can be regularly applied to your yard as they feed off of flea larvae and other outdoor pests (e.g. grubs)
Ultrasonic "repelling" devices - including collars and combs
Vitamins and supplements - including B vitamins, brewers yeast, garlic (in moderation), and essential fatty acids
Vacuum your home often and immediately dispose of its contents outside of the home
Wash your pet’s bedding weekly in very hot, soapy water

The use of such "natural" parasite-controlling products and practices will likely have fewer negative side effects on your dog than if you use their chemical-based counterparts. Your own home environment will also likely have less "toxic residue" than if you used chemical products.

Most holistic veterinarians and other holistic practitioners will tell you that they believe the use of chemical-based parasite products will actually weaken your dog’s immune system, thereby doing more harm than good to their overall health and well-being. In such a compromised health condition, they’ll actually be more vulnerable to a parasitic attack. Many holistic practitioners might also tell you that the risk posed by a population of parasites is far less than the risks associated with using "toxic" control products.

Your holistic health care team will instead likely encourage you to focus on providing your dog with the best environment you possibly can - high-quality food, homeopathic and herbal remedies regular exercise, mental stimulation in a stress-free home, and minimal exposure to Western medicines - and to use "natural" products when needed to control parasites. The result just might be that your dog will fend better in the "battle of the bugs" than if they are repeatedly dosed with potentially deadly chemicals.

Whatever method of parasite control you chose for your dog, focus on prevention, plan your attack, and be consistent with implementing such a plan. It’s simply far easier to prevent such things as a flea or worm infestation than it is to get rid of one and to clear up the lingering physical effects on your beloved canine companion.
